About Us

It was once said that... "iVote Australia is run by a bunch of nerds who live in a garage and do extreme stuff like write letters to the editor and watch The West Wing".

To a point, that was true. However, since the iVote website went live in late July the team has grown into a national network of hardworking, innovative and driven young Australians.

Headed up by a young team in Sydney, we continue to work hard leading up to the Federal Election and beyond.

In the beginning...

We were fed up with having to pretend that politics was boring and not mention it when down at the pub with our ‘cool’ friends. We were seriously worried about how little some of our friends understood about Democracy in Australia and so this website was born.

There were over 1.4 Million votes cast by young Australians in 2004. Young Aussies according to the AEC are aged between 17 – 25 and unless you are already a member of the Young Liberals, Young Labor, Young Democrats or some other sort of junior political organisation its fair to say that you don’t spend your time cruising around the major political parties websites finding out how various policies and announcements will affect you.

Recent global movements like Make Poverty History and Live Earth are proof that apathy isn’t rampant amongst young people, however the ball is dropped at the ballot box.

There are numerous reports (check the links section), that describe the lack of understanding by young people about the political process. This lack of understanding means all the good work done by attending these events and taking an active role in understanding the issues is lost.

We are in no way pushing for a change of government or for that matter, maintaining the status quo, we simply hope to increase understanding of the political process amongst young Aussies. Arguing with that is like shooting bambi.
